Travel Diaries: Guatemala

This was probably the best trip I have ever been on. The trip started off to a rocky start due to flight delays and a possible cancellation on the Acatenango hike, but we quickly turned it around and decided to just go with the flow. Usually we have our trips planned to the minute, but this trip was very relaxed and lowkey.

We started in Antigua where we spent the first couple of days exploring the vibrant and gorgeous city. Our group has a couple of vegetarians, and we were quickly impressed by the abundance of not only vegetarian options but how fresh and flavorful everything we ate was. My friends and I early on decided that the food in Guatemala was the best we’ve ever had from all the places we’d traveled together. We did all the things locals recommended, and rounded out our time in Antigua doing the Acatenango Volcano hike through Wicho & Charlie (who we highly recommend). That hike was hands down the hardest, yet most fufilling experience in my life. I consider myself an active person, but hiking for 5 hours on a straight incline pushed me in ways that I never thought I would be able to. Once we summited, we were freezing, tired, and every single part of our bodies hurt. Yet, seeing Fuego erupt that night made it all worth it and the sunrise the next morning is one that can never be rivaled.

Our trip ended at Lake Atitlan. We spent the next two days relaxing, eating, and taking in each of the gorgeous towns surrounding the lake. Guatemala is hands down one of the most gorgeous and friendly countries I’ve ever visited. The community felt a lot like the South Asian community, where every one you meet welcomes you with open arms and is eager to help you. This trip is one I’ll never forget and will always cherish.
